3. Frozen evaporator coil
Ice on the coil trips the system off; then it thaws slightly and restarts. If you see ice on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines, shut cooling off, let it thaw, and address the airflow or refrigerant cause.
4. Low refrigerant
A leak lowers pressure until safety switches shut the compressor down; pressure recovers, it restarts, and the loop repeats. This one needs an EPA-certified tech to find and fix the leak — topping off alone doesn’t cure it.
5. Dirty condenser coils
When the outdoor coil is caked with dirt, grass clippings, or cottonwood fluff, the system can’t shed heat and overheats itself into shutdown.
