I can’t speak to their actual service, but my experience with one of their drivers was extremely disappointing. I was signaling to merge while making a right turn, and instead of allowing it safely, the driver sped up to block me, laughed, and then made an obscene gesture. It was rude, unsafe, and very unprofessional.

If this is how their drivers act on the road, it’s hard to feel comfortable trusting this company in my home. Employees should understand that their behavior reflects directly on the company’s reputation.”

We’ve had Llona work on 2 plumbing projects and one emergency (my husband drilled through a water pipe 🙄) and honestly we’d never use anyone else. They’re so nice- everyone- the ladies in the office, the guys who have come out to do the onsite work. I feel like they definitely know what they’re doing and they have always given us a very fair price. Some people gouge us when they see our home but I’ve never felt they have and I’ve compared their prices to others in the area. Wouldn’t go anywhere else!

This was our first time experience with Llona Plumbing, and it was great! We will definitely use them in the future. Other plumbing companies have become so big and corporate — we prefer the smaller, more customer-friendly small, family run business. Our tech Roger was terrific! He accomplished a lot in a short amount of time. Very polite and professional.

Roger Garcia arrived early & after introduction went straight to work. He was very polite & extremely efficient. We received excellent service from him.
He was such a pleasure to meet him.
We had original install of both the garbage disposal & the kitchen faucet which both needed replacement. We had already purchased the new items ourselves & had them on hand, however, the new installs were more complicated, but Roger was able to overcome the challenge & both pieces of equipment are running better than ever. Thank You, Roger for an excellent job. He is quite an asset to your company!
We feel that the cost was very fair! We are quite pleased to have Llona Plumbing to call on when needed. Great company & Staff!

Mitch came out today to do 21 point inspection and tune up on my 2 - 10 year old AC units. I’ve lived in Florida for 20 years and dealt with a lot of different AC companies. Mitch from Pronto is by far, the most professional and knowledgeable AC tech that I’ve ever dealt with.
He walked me through the process and explained what was happening with my system including areas that were functioning well and items to keep an eye on.
The next time that I have an AC need Pronto will be my first and only call. Thanks Mitch and The Pronto team!

Prompt, thorough, professional, tidy, polite, and knowledgeable service. Eddie was an excellent tech and explained all service options to me as well as made appropriate recommendations for my needs (didn't do the pushy oversell).

I would highly recommend Pronto Svc Pros & Llona Plumbing. Everyone from the office team to the techs in your home or business were top notch! They made a leak that I thought was going to be a nightmare into a very bearable/manageable experience with no frustration from the repair team.

Called Pronto Service Pros late (4:45pm) on Monday needing my AC system replaced. The quote arrived early the next morning at an excellent price, within an hour and a half the crew was here to remove my old system (a split with the air handler in the attic and compressor outside). They finished later in the day and my new system works great. Technicians were great, took all the old stuff with them, left my inside utility spotless clean. Oh, communications were outstanding - I got texts on when the techs were leaving to come here, and honestly I am impressed. I would recommend them without hesitation.

How to Clean an HVAC Filter: A Pronto Service Pros Guide

How to Clean an HVAC Filter: Guide from the Experts

Learning how to clean an HVAC filter properly is essential for maintaining your air conditioning system’s efficiency and your home’s air quality in Tampa Bay. While some homeowners assume all filters need replacement, many reusable filters can be cleaned and restored to like-new performance, saving money and reducing waste. This comprehensive guide walks you through the entire cleaning process, helping you determine which filters can be cleaned and providing expert techniques for maximum effectiveness.

Identifying Which HVAC Filters Can Be Cleaned

Before diving into how to clean an HVAC filter, it’s crucial to identify whether your filter is washable or disposable. Not all filters are created equal, and attempting to clean a disposable filter can damage it and compromise your system’s performance.

Washable Filter Types

Electrostatic Filters: These permanent filters use static electricity to capture particles and are designed for repeated washing. They typically feature a metal or plastic frame with washable synthetic materials.

Foam Filters: Common in window units and some ductless systems, these filters are specifically designed for regular cleaning and reuse.

Metal Mesh Filters: Often found in older systems or range hoods, these durable filters can be cleaned indefinitely with proper care.

Disposable Filter Types

Fiberglass Filters: These inexpensive, thin filters cannot be cleaned and must be replaced monthly. Attempting to wash them destroys their filtering media.

Pleated Paper/Polyester Filters: While more efficient than fiberglass, these filters deteriorate when wet and should never be washed.

HEPA Filters: High-efficiency filters lose their effectiveness when washed and must be replaced according to manufacturer specifications.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Clean an HVAC Filter

Follow this detailed process for how to clean an HVAC filter safely and effectively:

Step 1: Turn Off Your HVAC System

Always shut down your system completely before removing the filter. This prevents unfiltered air from circulating and protects you from moving parts. Turn off power at both the thermostat and circuit breaker for added safety.

Step 2: Locate and Remove the Filter

Most filters are found in the return air duct or air handler. In Tampa Bay homes, common locations include:

  • Behind return air grilles in hallways or central areas
  • Inside the air handler unit (often in garages, closets, or attics)
  • At the base of the air handler in horizontal systems

Document the filter’s orientation before removal—look for airflow arrows indicating proper installation direction.

Step 3: Initial Inspection and Dry Cleaning

Before wet cleaning, assess the filter’s condition. If you notice tears, permanent discoloration, or structural damage, replacement is necessary regardless of filter type. For washable filters in good condition, begin with dry cleaning:

Use a soft brush or vacuum with a brush attachment to remove loose debris. Work from the clean side (downstream) toward the dirty side to avoid pushing contaminants deeper into the filter media. This initial step makes wet cleaning more effective.

Step 4: Wet Cleaning Process

For thorough cleaning of washable filters:

Rinse with Water: Use lukewarm water and moderate pressure. Hot water can damage some filter materials, while high pressure can tear the media. Rinse from the clean side toward the dirty side—opposite of airflow direction during operation.

Apply Cleaning Solution: Mix a gentle solution of warm water and mild dish soap. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or degreasers that can damage filter materials or leave harmful residues. Let the solution soak for 10-15 minutes for heavily soiled filters.

Gentle Scrubbing: Use a soft brush to work the cleaning solution through the filter media. Focus on visibly dirty areas but avoid aggressive scrubbing that could damage the filter structure.

Thorough Rinsing: Rinse completely until water runs clear and no soap residue remains. Leftover soap can attract dirt faster and reduce airflow efficiency.

Step 5: Proper Drying Techniques

Complete drying is critical when learning how to clean an HVAC filter properly. Installing a damp filter can lead to mold growth and system damage:

  • Shake off excess water gently
  • Lean the filter against a wall at an angle for drainage
  • Allow air drying in a well-ventilated area
  • Avoid direct sunlight, which can warp plastic frames
  • Never use heat sources like hair dryers or ovens
  • Allow 24-48 hours for complete drying in humid Tampa Bay conditions

How Often Should You Clean or Replace HVAC Filters?

In Tampa Bay’s challenging environment, filter maintenance frequency depends on several factors:

Standard Replacement Schedule

Disposable Filters:

  • 1-inch fiberglass: Monthly replacement
  • Pleated filters (1-4 inches): Every 2-3 months
  • High-efficiency pleated: Every 3-6 months

Washable Filters:

  • Clean monthly during peak cooling season (May-October)
  • Clean every 2-3 months during mild weather
  • Deep clean quarterly with thorough soap washing

Factors Requiring More Frequent Cleaning

Living in Tampa Bay presents unique challenges that may require more frequent filter maintenance:

High Humidity: Our subtropical climate means filters work harder to remove moisture-loving contaminants like mold spores and dust mites.

Coastal Location: Salt air and sand particles near the coast clog filters faster than inland areas.

Construction: Nearby construction or renovation projects dramatically increase airborne particles.

Pets: Pet hair and dander require monthly filter cleaning or replacement, regardless of type.

Allergies: Household members with allergies benefit from more frequent filter maintenance to maintain optimal indoor air quality.

Common Mistakes When Cleaning HVAC Filters

Avoid these errors when learning how to clean an HVAC filter:

Using Harsh Chemicals

Bleach, ammonia, or strong degreasers can break down filter materials and leave toxic residues. Stick to mild dish soap or specialized HVAC filter cleaners.

Incomplete Drying

Installing damp filters promotes mold growth and can damage your system. Tampa Bay’s humidity makes thorough drying especially important—when in doubt, wait another day.

Cleaning Non-Washable Filters

Attempting to wash disposable filters destroys their effectiveness. According to ASHRAE standards, wet fiberglass or pleated paper filters lose structural integrity and filtering capability.

Ignoring Manufacturer Guidelines

Always follow specific manufacturer instructions for your filter type. Some electrostatic filters require special cleaning procedures or conditioning after washing.

When to Replace Instead of Clean

Even with proper maintenance, filters eventually need replacement:

Visible Damage: Tears, holes, or separated layers compromise filtration effectiveness.

Persistent Odors: Filters that smell musty or moldy after cleaning harbor embedded contaminants.

Reduced Airflow: If airflow remains restricted after cleaning, the filter media may be permanently clogged.

Age: Washable filters typically last 5-10 years with proper care. Beyond this, replacement ensures optimal performance.

System Upgrades: When upgrading your HVAC system, consider upgrading to more efficient filter options.

The Impact of Clean Filters on System Performance

Understanding how to clean an HVAC filter properly delivers significant benefits:

Energy Efficiency: Clean filters reduce system strain, lowering energy consumption by up to 15% according to Energy.gov.

Extended Equipment Life: Reduced strain on components means fewer repairs and longer system lifespan.

Improved Air Quality: Clean filters effectively remove allergens, dust, and contaminants from your home’s air.

Lower Utility Bills: Improved efficiency translates directly to reduced cooling costs—especially important during Tampa Bay’s long cooling season.

Professional Filter Services

While knowing how to clean an HVAC filter is valuable, some situations benefit from professional attention:

  • Annual system maintenance includes professional filter inspection
  • Severe contamination from construction or flooding
  • Uncertainty about filter type or cleaning methods
  • System performance issues despite clean filters

For comprehensive air conditioning maintenance in Tampa Bay, professional service ensures all components work together efficiently.
