Difference between an AC and a heat pump system?

This is one of the most commonly asked questions we get from our clients when they give us a call for an estimate. It can sound very deceiving, but there are significant differences in both systems. We’ll be going over the main differences in both systems so you can make the right decision for your budget and needs.

What is the difference between an air conditioner and a heat pump?

The main difference between the two systems is the energy efficiency. An air conditioner will cool your home and heat your home in the winter by using an internal heat strip that uses electricity. In contrast, a heat pump can heat and cool your home by reversing the freon direction in your system, so it uses less electricity in the winter. A heat pump is equipped with an internal heat strip for emergency heat if the temperature drops too low. Heat pumps are the most commonly installed system in Florida.

What is the cost difference between a heat pump and an air conditioner?

It’s honestly not a huge difference when you factor in the electrical savings when installing a heat pump system. A heat pump is a little more expensive to install, but you will see a significant difference in your electrical costs in the winter. You can save hundreds of dollars on electricity. An air conditioning unit is more economical if you are on a budget and will still give you electrical savings than your old system.

What do they mean when they say ‘straight cool’?

Straight cool is the technical terminology for an air conditioner. Because it is mainly for cooling the home, they call them straight cool systems.

If I have a straight cool system now, can I upgrade to a heat pump?

Absolutely! We will evaluate your current system size, electrical, and other variables for a heat pump during your free estimate. We may need to replace the copper lines for the freon to accommodate the new heat pump and upgrade the breakers. Upgrading your old efficient system with a new one can not only help with electrical costs but also help the environment which is always an added bonus.

If you’re looking to get your system replaced and you’re ready to get a free estimate, give us a call. Discuss your options today with one of our Service Pros! We wouldn’t install a system in your home that we wouldn’t install in our own home. We can guarantee that!
